Iglesia ni Cristo members in Davao set for August 31 rally
A highly-placed INC member tells Rappler that this is their way to stop Justice Secretary Leila De Lima from using them for her own political will

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – At least “200,000” Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) members from all over Mindanao are making their way to Davao City on Sunday, August 30, to hold a nationally-coordinated rally against Justice Secretary Leila Delima on Monday, August 31.

A highly-placed INC member told Rappler that this is their way to go against De Lima who is “known to be manipulative.”

“We are up against De Lima because we know she is capable of manipulating things for 2016 and the ministers who are now under DOJ custody might be used to compromise us and to negotiate with our church,” the source said. “We do not want that we will be entangled to their candidates on 2016. We are hitting her because she is being used for their own political end and she is known to be manipulative.”

The same sourced added that the INC cannot be taken against their will especially come the 2016 elections.

“As it is now, President [Benigno] Aquino and Mar Roxas are not close to our church and with what De Lima is doing, we cannot be her hostage during elections, that’s why pinangunahan na namin siya (we preempted them) and she is holding the ministers right now,” he said.

Lawrence Bantiding, chief of the city’s business bureau, confirmed that the INC members have been granted a permit to rally at the Benigno Aquino Sr. Hall of Justice in the city’s Ecoland district.

Ecoland interconnects the city’s busiest streets: Sandawa road, Candelaria Street and Quimpo Boulevard. This is where key government agencies and institutions are located such as the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal (DCOTT), Davao City Traffic Police Office, PNP Crime Laboratory, and University of Mindanao-Matina Campus, among others.

Task Force Davao commander Col. Macaraeg Alberto said that they have already met with officials from the Davao Central Chapter of INC and other government agencies involved.

“We had a meeting yesterday with their head and he made it clear that they don’t want to cause traffic problems, that’s why they are coordinating about the traffic and security plans ahead,” he told Rappler. “We have designated units in particular areas for the 3-day rally.”

Rodelio Poliquit, chief of the City Transport and Traffic Management  Office (CTTMO) said they already prepared a traffic deployment plan for the rally. – Rappler.com
