Ashley Madison, the embattled website catering to married people looking for affairs, denied that it will soon be forced to shut down. On Monday, August 31, the site’s parent company Avid Life Media released a statement saying its troubles have been “greatly exaggerated.” The firm also said news site Gizmodo “made incorrect assumptions” about some of the leaked data, leading it to overstate damage that the scandal has inflicted on Ashley Madison. Gizmodo looked at the data and concluded that the vast majority of profiles of women on Ashley Madison were fake, or created by automated “bots” whose IP addresses trace back to Ashley Madison itself. Avid Life Media insisted the male to female ratio of its clients is 1.2 to one.
