LIST: Maynilad villages to be affected by 12-hour water disruption
(UPDATED) Residents of 11 Metro Manila cities and 4 localities in Cavite are encouraged to store water the day before the start of water disruption

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Major water concessionaire Maynilad has released a list of barangays (villages) that may experience more than 12 hours without water everyday starting this September.

The water disruption may begin as early as Tuesday, September 8, if dams that supply water to Metro Manila do not experience rain in the next few days.

Maynilad will be imposing a rotational schedule of water disruption among these villages.

Other areas serviced by Maynilad which are not in this list may observe weaker flow of water from their faucets starting next week.

Residents of the listed villages are encouraged to store water a day before Maynilad announces water interruption.

The list only covers villages serviced by Maynilad, the water concessionaire that caters to the western portion of Metro Manila.

Manila Water services the eastern portion. They previously announced that areas in Quezon City, Antipolo, Rodriguez, Taguig, Pasig and Marikina may also experience more than 12 hours without water. They are yet to release a list of affected villages.

Water budget

The water disruption is due to water conservation efforts of the government in preparation for more intense drought conditions in the coming months.

PAGASA previously announced the El Niño currently affecting the country is likely to strengthen. Thus, dry spell in the megacity is likely to last until June 2016.

To conserve water, the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) is lowering the amount of water it allows Maynilad and Manila Water to distribute to Metro Manila residents.

The water comes from dams like La Mesa Dam, Angat Dam, and Ipo Dam where water level has been below-normal due to the dry spell. (READ: Philippines faces ‘high’ level of water shortage in 2040 – study)

So far, only the September water allocation has been finalized. The reduced allocation is 38 cubic meters/second (cm/s), lower than the normal 41 cm/s.

Water allocation may be lowered further in the coming months. The lowest tentative allocation so far is for the months of February and March 2016 – only 34 cm/s. – Rappler.com
