
The 11-story hotel that was built more than half a century ago ahead of the first Tokyo Olympics will be demolished by the end of September, to give way to a taller structure that expects to accommodate the influx of tourists when Japan hosts the games again in 2020. Not even an online petition called “Save the Okura” – which a British lifestyle magazine started – could change the mind of developers. Two glass towers will replace the iconic structure that has hosted foreign leaders, dignitaries, and international celebrities. Time magazine reported, however: “The new building will be born from the same linage as the original. The tower’s architect, Yoshio Taniguchi, is the son of one of the original building’s principle architects.”
