There are 3 trillion trees on Earth, or about 422 for every person, researchers found, but tree cover had nearly halved since the start of human civilization. The largest forest areas are in the tropics, which are home to about 43% of the world’s trees, according to a statement from Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Experts combined state-of-the-art satellite and old-fashioned headcounts, along with supercomputer technology to come up with the most comprehensive tree census ever. They found that tree densities “usually plummet as the human population increases.”
