The family of the Syrian boy whose body was found face down in the sand on a Turkish beach had been trying to emigrate to Canada. The boy was believed to be one of at least 12 migrants who were trying to get to Greece when their boats sank in Turkish waters. A report by the Ottawa Citizen said the boy’s aunt who had migrated to Canada more than 20 years ago had tried to sponsor the family of 4, but Canada’s immigration authorities rejected the privately-sponsored refugee application in June.
