Guatemala swears in new president

Guatemala’s vice president, 79-year-old Alejandro Maldonado, was sworn in by Congress as the country’s new president on Thursday, September 3. Assuming office only in May, Maldonado will serve out the rest of the term of disgraced former president Otto Perez. He will hand over the reins of power to a new president on January 14 after elections on Sunday. Perez resigned just before midnight Wednesdayafter lawmakers stripped him of presidential immunity. He has been accused of corruption, involving $3.7 million in bribes paid by importers in exchange for illegal discounts on customs duties.
