MANILA, Philippines – “He was just doing his job.”
That’s what Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino had to say about Saturnino Fabros, the unlikely star of a viral video that swept the social media sphere by storm on Tuesday, August 14.
In the video taken by a TV5 producer, Fabros was accosted and later physically assaulted by a motorist who was later identified as Robert Blair Carabuena.
“We at the MMDA condemn to the highest degree the physical assault perpetrated by an abusive and violent motorist on our hapless traffic enforcer who was just enforcing traffic laws,” he said. The Palace on Wednesday also commented on the incident.
In the statement, they also demanded a public apology from Carabuena. “Not only for Mr. Fabros, but for the entire Authority, which he unjustly and intentionally offended,” he said.
He said that the incident undermined the person of Fabros, as well as that of Tolentino and the MMDA. The MMDA will also file a case against Carabuena.
‘Inappropriate conduct’
On Wednesday, Philip Morris Philippines also admitted that Carabuena is its employee.
“Mr. Carabuena was on his personal time and was not doing any work in behalf of the company when the incident took place,” the company said.
It added that while the circumstances of the incident is unclear even to them, the company “would obviously not condone inappropriate conduct by any of our employees.” -Rappler.com
