Muslims post on Facebook: I am a 'MUSLIM type' and I am not a bomber

MANILA, Philippines – When a crime suspect is described in the news, the usual descriptions include height, hair color, and any out of the ordinary features. But sometimes, the description gets out of hand.

Over the weekend, a certain police sketch from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) made its rounds online, causing outrage in a number of local circles. It was of a bombing suspect in Zamboanga, a man in a hoodie described as a “Muslim type”.

Filipinos on the Internet expressed outrage at the stereotypical description of the bomber:

This is the latest discriminatory attack to hit the Muslim community that has spread online. Recently a young Muslim man was arrested for bringing a home-made clock to school which his teachers thought was a bomb.

The NBI’s description sparked an online movement in the Muslim community on Facebook, in which people changed their profile photos to include a special frame.

Facebook page Young Moro Professionals Network gathered these photos into one album that you can view here:

The NBI has apologized for using the term and NBI-9 Regional Director Atty Ferdinand Lavin met with Muslim leaders on Monday, September 21, to discuss the issue, said a report on CNN Philippines.

What are your thoughts on racial profiling? Would you consider it outright descrimination, or is it warranted in some cases? – Rappler.com
