A soldier was wounded in a dawn attack by rebels in North Cotabato

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – An Army soldier was wounded in the latest attack of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) against the military in Pikit, Cotabato dawn Thursday, August 23, a military officer said.

Col Prudencio Asto, spokesman of the 6th Infantry Division, said that a still undetermined number of BIFF members attacked an Army detachment along the national highway in Barangay Inug-ug, Pikit at around 1 am Thursday.

One soldier was hurt while the number of casualties in the BIFF is unknown, Asto said.

The military spokesman added that a platoon from the 7th Infantry Battalion was immediately deployed to provide fire support to the attacked detachment.

Firefight is ongoing as of posting.

The BIFF early this month mounted simultaneous attacks in neighboring Maguindanao on the eve of the resumption of talks between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front. The BIFF broke away from the MILF, citing ideological differences.

The Maguindanao attacks killed 5 soldiers and subsequent gun battles have displaced about 40,000 people. – Rappler.com
