Charity over flowers for Robredo

MANILA, Philippines – The wife of the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo appealed for donations to charity, instead of flowers, from those who plan to visit his wake.

His wife Leni said their family, friends, and other supporters may send donations to Robredo’s favorite charities – the groups Missionaries of the Poor and Physicians for Peace.

A long-time Naga City mayor, Robredo drastically improved his city, and is remembered for his simple lifestyle and generosity. For the past few days, his former constituents trooped to his family’s modest house to keep vigil and recount his kindness, such as giving them some personal money for their own concerns.

“Tingin ko alam naman ng lahat na mabuti siyang ama hindi lang sa amin pero sa maraming tao,” Robredo’s eldest daughter, Aika, earlier said. (I think we all know that he is a good father not only to us, but to a lot of people.)

Even employees in his agency, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), remembered him for his kindheartedness. “He was very humble. We (didn’t) feel intimidated approaching him,” said DILG employee Tess Vergarodo. 

Robredo’s wake is being held in Naga City, and will be transferred to Manila on Friday, August 24. His family has agreed to give him a state funeral – the highest kind the government can give – as the Palace suggested. – Rappler.com
