Website introduces Raul Roco to new generation of Filipinos

MANILA, Philippines – A website honoring the late Senator Raul S. Roco went live on Monday, October 26, aimed at refreshing the memories of Filipinos about the life and legacy of the famous public servant..

 

The RaulRoco.org website was created by a group of Roco staff members to also introduce the Roco to a whole new generation of young Filipinos. 

 

“We wish to keep Roco’s memory and principles alive through this website. Hopefully, Roco’s memory can inspire Filipinos to demand a change in traditional politics and choose leaders who, like Roco, can serve with sincerity and integrity,” said Obi Roco, former staff and daughter in law of the late Senator.

 

The website, which was launched on the birthday of the late Senator, aims to educate and inspire Filipinos by sharing the life of Raul Roco – from his days as a young student leader to his years in government service as a legislator, cabinet secretary, and committed public servant. 

 

Karen Yaptinchay Gella, Roco’s former communications head, said the proponents of the website found it timely to remind Filipinos just before the 2016 elections to vote wisely and conscientiously.  

 

“We should vote for leaders who are honest and can lead the Philippines towards sustainable growth,” added Vic Sanchez, former Roco staff and son of late Labor Secretary Bobbit Sanchez.

Public service 

Raul Roco, born 1941, was a Philippine lawmaker and Education Secretary from Bicol who devoted his life in the service of the Filipino people. Roco sought to provide equal opportunities for all Filipinos. He championed women’s rights and sought to improve access to education for the youth.

 

Many remember Roco for his sharp intellect and ability to dissect arguments, particularly during the impeachment trial of former President Joseph Estrada where Roco was one of the senator-judges. 

 

Roco ran for President twice, the first attempt in 1998 and again in 2004. Although he lost in both campaigns, he was widely seen as a lead contender and an alternative to the traditional politicians of that time. Many of his admirers claim he is “the best president the Philippines never had.” Roco died in 2005 due to prostate cancer and is buried in his hometown of Naga City. – Rappler.com
