NAGA CITY, Philippines – A Nagueño himself, Senator Joker Arroyo was in Naga City Hall Sunday morning, August 26, to pay his last respects to the late Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo.

The senator got emotional. He was seen wiping his tears when the Philippine National Police (PNP) was rendering arrival honors for Robredo’s remains. He joined city government officials in welcoming the remains of the late Secretary to the City Hall.

“I came here to pay my last respects to Secretary Jesse. I’m from here like Jesse and he was a good friend. He’s a very simple man and he deserves all these adulation that he’s getting now – nationwide and also here in Naga,” Arroyo told reporters after the morning mass.

“We were not close but we were friends,” he added.

From a two-day wake in Malacañang, Robredo’s remains were flown back to Naga City and brought to the City Hall around 11 a.m.

“We are proud of him… Everyone has talked about his achievements. They are very hard to equal,” said Arroyo.

Robredo served as Mayor of Naga City for a total of 6 terms.

Arroyo also described Robredo as “forthright,” “simple,” and “very unassuming.”

“I didn’t even know that he never brought bring his family to Manila. Every Cabinet member, the moement you become a cabinet member, you bring your family to Manila and enjoy the perks,” he said.

“Jesse left his family here and he comes home every weekend to be with his family. I don’t know of any Cabinet member who is like that. That’s a wondrous thing,” he added.
