Aquino to confer Legion of Honor on Robredo

MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III will bestow upon the late Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo one last honor before his remains are cremated.

In a bulletin, the Committee on Funeral Arrangements and Burial said Aquino will confer on Robredo the Philippine Legion of Honor with the rank of Chief Commander. The award will be given on Tuesday, August 28, in Naga City.

“The Philippine Legion of Honor is considered the highest award the President can bestow without the need for approval of Congress. Secretary Robredo is being conferred the Philippine Legion of Honor for life achievement as Secretary of the Interior and as Mayor of Naga City,” said the bulletin posted on the Official Gazette.

Aquino will bestow the award after the concelebrated Requiem Mass in Naga City on Tuesday. 

Budget Secretary Florencio “Butch” Abad, Robredo’s friend and partymate at the Liberal Party, will read the citation. The President will then present the insignia to Robredo’s widow, Leni Robredo. Leni Robredo or another family member will give a response.

After this, Aquino will deliver a eulogy for his late alter ego.

After the conferment ceremonies, Robredo’s remains will be brought to the Funeraria Imperal for the State Funeral.

Aside from Robredo, other past recipients of the Legion of Honor include the late banana magnate Jesus Ayala, businessman and philanthropist Don Jaime Zobel de Ayala, former New York representative Stephen J Solarz and boxing champion Sarangani Rep Manny Pacquiao. – Rappler.com
