MANILA, Philippines –  A foul smell coming from a factory in Quezon City has affected residents – even reaching up to the nearby city of Pasig – since late Sunday, November 22.

According to Jose Aresa of Quezon City’s Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the disturbing odor was due to the release of fumes by one of the monomer tanks of Chemrez Inc., a plant in Bagumbayan, Quezon City that manufactures plastic. Chemrez Inc. is part of the D&L industrial group.

The tank is still releasing fumes as of 12:30 noon Monday. BFP-QC has sent 10 fire trucks to control the situation in the site.

At 11:30 pm on Sunday, residents of Barangays Rosario and Ugong in Pasig called up the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (QCDRRMO) to complain about the foul smell. This prompted QCDRRMO to send 2 fire engines and an ambulance.

At 1:30 am on November 23, BFP recorded that the oxygen reading was normal at 20.9% and the methane was below the critical level of + 5.

However, several residents, especially in Pasig, sent their complaints to Rappler even after the BFP’s response.

“As of this writing, we have been tortured for hours by the stench of an unknown substance- too pungent the aroma makes us dizzy and almost nauseous. Brother and I had to go outside during this wee hour to investigate [for] ourselves. The aroma stretches across the street,” Jamee Ibasco wrote in a private message sent at around 3 am.

While Romeo Campo Jr said: “Amoy pintura na amoy rugby. Buong lugar dito mabaho na masakit sa dibdib. Paglabas namin halos lahat ng tao nasa kalsada. Pagpunta namin sa baranggay marami nadin ang nag complain.”

(It smells like paint and rugby. The smell is all over the place. It hurts our chest already. When we went out a lot of people are outside. And when we went to the branggay hall, there are many residents who have also complained.)

Others took their complaints to social media:
