MANILA, Philippines – A total of 20 strong to moderate aftershocks have been recorded since a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the Philippines’ coast near Eastern Visayas on Friday night, August 31, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

In its latest bulletin, Philvolcs said all the aftershocks were between magnitudes 3.6 and 6.8.

At least two strong tremors (6.4 and 6.8) were registered right after the 8:47 pm quake, and another 6.0 was monitored at 7:38 am on Saturday, September 1.

The aftershocks were located in the same area, about 100-150 kilometers east of the municipalities of Guiuan in Eastern Samar and Burgos in Surigao del Norte.

Last night, a magnitude 7.6 quake — downgraded from an initial 7.9 — shook the Eastern Visayas very close to Guiuan.

It was felt in most parts of the country and triggered a region-wide tsunami alert that was later lifted.

No casualties were reported in Guiuan, but in Cagayan de Oro City, a 50-year-old woman died and a 5-year-old kid was injured in a landslide.

A few houses there as well as bridges on Samar were also partially destroyed. – Rappler.com
