MANILA, Philippines – Despite the political controversies and natural disasters that rocked the Philippines in 2015, most Filipinos are entering 2016 with hope, according to a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.
The survey, conducted from December 5 to 8 with 1,200 adult respondents, showed 92% of Filipinos are hopeful about 2016, while 8% are entering the coming year with fear.
The latest figure is just one percentage point lower than the 93% who entered 2015 with hope.
The number of Filipinos who are entering the new year with fear also rose slightly. Last year, 6% of respondents reported entering 2015 with fear.
While hope for 2016 was predominant in all geographic areas, Metro Manila registered a 3-point increase. From 91% in 2014, it rose to 94% in 2015 – the highest since 2011 (96%), according to SWS.
But hope in the coming year fell slightly in Mindanao and Balance Luzon, with both areas posting a 3-percentage point decline. In Mindanao, it dropped from 91% in 2014 to 88% in 2015, while in Balance Luzon, it dropped from 96% in 2014 to 93% in 2015.
Meanwhile, there was a one-percentage point decrease in the Visayas, from 91% in 2014 to 90% in 2015.
The SWS survey also showed that those who expected a happy Christmas reported greater hope for the coming year. Among those who expressed this sentiment, 95% said they are hopeful for the coming year.
Of those who expected neither a happy nor sad Christmas, 86% are entering 2016 with hope, while 74% of those who expected a sad Christmas are hopeful for the new year.
Meanwhile, hope in the coming year fell slightly among all socio-economic classes, except for class E, which registered a one-percentage point change from 87% in 2014 to 88% in 2015.
A two-percentage point drop was recorded in classes A, B, and C: from 95% in 2014 to 93% in 2015.
In class D, hope for the coming year fell by 3 points, from 95% in 2014 to 92% in 2015.
Since SWS began this survey in 2000, Filipinos’ hope for the new year has always been high. It reached a record high of 95% in 2002 and 2011, eased in the coming years, and has since remained at the 90s levels. – Rappler.com
