MANILA, Philippines – An “overwhelming majority” of Filipinos are optimistic about their prospects in 2016, according to the results of a survey conducted by Pulse Asia Research Incorporated.

In its December 2015 nationwide survey on the new year, the pollster said 89% of Filipinos “continue to be hopeful” about 2016, the year when they will elect their new leaders.

This is 1 percentage point higher than in November, when 88% of the respondents said they are hopeful about the coming year.

This is the general sentiment among Filipinos in all geographic area and socio-economic classes with only 1% saying they are not hopeful about their prospects the next 12 months. 

Pulse Asia president Ronald Holmes said that those in Metro Manila “are relatively more inclined to be hopeful about the year ahead than those in the Visayas (95% versus 85%).”

Meanwhile, 11% of the respondents are uncertain on how they would face the coming year, a feeling more pronounced among those living in the Visayas (14%) than in Metro Manila (4%).

The poll surveyed 1,800 registered voters nationwide from  December 4-11, using face-to-face interviews. It has a ±2% error margin and a confidence level of 95% at the national level.

The survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) showed similar results – 92% of Filipinos said they are hopeful about 2016 despite the challenges faced in 2015. 

The year 2015 has been filled with momentous events, starting with the Philippine visit of Pope Francis in January, and capped by the hosting of the Asia-Economic Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders’ Summit in November.

But also in January, the country witnessed the controversial operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao, where 44 members of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (SAF 44) and others were killed, while pursuing Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir or Marwan.
