Marine colonel, Chinese national arrested in drug raid
Authorities seize P320 million worth of shabu during a drug operation in Manila

MANILA, Philippines – A senior officer of the Philippine Marines and a Chinese national were among the suspects arrested by law enforcers on Thursday, January 21.

The operation, conducted by operatives of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Anti-Illegal Drugs Group (AIDG) and the Philippine Enforcement Agency (PDEA), resulted in the seizure of P320 million ($6.675 million) worth of methamphetamine hydrochloride (shabu) during a raid on a house in Santa Cruz, Manila.

The two suspects were identified by police as Marine Lieutenant Colonel Ferdinand Marcelino, an active member of the Philippine Marines; and a certain Yan Yu Shou, a 33-year-old Chinese national.

“The operation was conducted by virtue of search warrant issued by the Quezon City Regional Trial Court which said that the house serves as a storage facility of illegal drugs,” the PNP said in a statement.

Police and PDEA agents also seized the following:

  • Assorted chemicals
  • Toyota Camry with plate number XEV-665
  • Laboratory equipment

Suspects have been brought to the AIDG headquarters in Cramp Crame, while the confiscated drugs and other evidence were turned over to the PDEA Laboratory Service.

Those apprehended will be charged for violating  Section 8 and 11 Article II of RA 9165, the police said.

In a statement, Navy spokesman Colonel Ed Arevalo confirmed that a “Ferdinand Marcelino” is an active Marine personnel but added they have yet to receive a formal report of the arrest. According to Arevalo, Marcelino was assigned as the Superintendent of the Navy Officer Candidate School  in Zambales just last January 18, 2016.

“These notwithstanding, the Navy does not condone any illegal activities of its members. If the person reported is indeed a member of the Navy and clearly in violation of our laws, it will cooperate actively in the implementation of the law,” he added.

Marcelino, who once headed the Special Enforcement Service of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, was the lead officer in the arrest of the “Alabang Boys” in 2008.

Then a major, Marcelino accused the Justice Department of taking bribes in exchange for the dropping of cases against the 3 suspects. – Rappler.com
