Lanao del Sur’s ‘Sleeping Beauty’ mountain range on fire
(UPDATED) 'The mountain range is too far, too wide, and inaccessible. This is a terrible disaster to our environment,' says ARMM Vice Governor Haroun Alrashid A. Lucman Jr

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Fire hit the so-called “Sleeping Beauty” mountain range in Lanao del Sur on Thursday, January 21, reports said.

Initial reports said that the fire started Thursday night in the mountain forests of Butig town.

Vice Governor Haroun Alrashid A. Lucman Jr of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao said in a Facebook post on Friday morning, January 22, that ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman has called for an emergency meeting that day with the local disaster risk reduction and management council.

“The AFP/PAF (Armed Forces of the Philippines/Philippine Air Force) will be here to brief us on their action plan,” he said.

The fire was declared under control at around 1 pm on Friday.

Lucman made a shoutout on Facebook on Thursday night, appealing for help to contain the fire.

“I don’t know of any person or entity in the government who can help or has the capability to contain the raging fire. The feeling of helplessness is too unbearable. The mountain range is too far, too wide, and inaccessible. This is a terrible disaster to our environment,” he said.

Some netizens from the area described the fire as “lava-like” as it glowed from the distance throughout Thursday night. (READ: Lanao del Sur forest fire feared volcano-related)
