After touchdown, the SEAIR Airbus A320's right landing gear blows out in front of the access road leading to airport tower. Firefighters respond to the incident, though one of the trucks is stuck along the airport's drainage canal, leading to injuries.

AKLAN, Philippines – The Kalibo International Airport (KIA) was temporarily closed on Thursday afternoon, April 14, after a South East Asian Airlines International (SEAIR) Airbus aircraft from Incheon, South Korea blew a tire after touching down.

KIA manager Martin Tere said the incident took place at around 2:42 p.m. when a SEAIR Airbus A320 with tail number RP-C5323 landed on runway 05.

After touchdown, its right landing gear blew out in front of the access road leading to the KIA tower and swerved to the right side of the runway before stopping.

“Galing sa Incheon, South Korea ang eroplano sakay ang 156 passengers at parating sa Kalibo Airport nang pumutok ang right landing gear sa may runway, malapit sa new ramp ng airport,” Tere said. (“The plane from Incheon South Korea held 156 passengers and was approaching Kalibo Airport when its right landing gear blew on the runway, newar the new ramp of the airport.”)

Two fire trucks of KIA responded immediately to the incident, howver, one of the KIA fire trucks got stuck along the airport’s drainage canal. After the incident, 4 fire fighters suffered injuries and were treated at the nearby Dr. Rafael S. Tumbokon Memorial Hospital in Kalibo, Aklan.

All 156 passengers who had been on board the SEAIR aircraft were evacuated and transported to the terminal by tourist buses for safety. No injuries among the passengers were reported, the KIA official stressed.

As of 8:00 pm, the plane was towed to the KIA parking bay and the aircraft landing gear was replaced.

Tere said CAAP’s Aircraft Accident Investigation and Inquiry Board (AAIIB) will conduct an investigation on Friday morning to assess the safety implications of the incident.

“As of this time, take off and landing at Kalibo airport is not allowed” based on their initial report. “Humingi pa tayo ng tulong sa mga contractors na may heavy equipment at sa local rescue teams sa Kalibo para makuha ang fire truck sa drainage canal ng irigasyon,” Tere added.
