MANILA, Philippines – US President Barack Obama has nominated US Special Representative to North Korea as the next ambassador to the Philippines, the White House said in a statement on Thursday, May 19.

The White House said Obama expressed his intent to nominate Sung Kim as ambassador to the Philippines. He will replace Ambassador Philip Goldberg, the US envoy to the country since 2013.

“I am pleased to announce that these experienced and committed individuals have decided to serve our country.  I look forward to working with them,” Obama said in his announcement of nominees to key administration posts.

The White House said that Kim, a career member of the Foreign Service, is the US Special Representative for North Korea Policy and Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of East Asia and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State. He has held these positions since 2014.  

He had served as ambassador to the Republic of Korea from 2011 to 2014, Special Envoy for the Six Party Talks from 2008 to 2011, and Director of the Office of Korean Affairs in the Bureau of East Asia and Pacific Affairs from 2006 to 2008.  

Kim was Political-Military Chief at the US Embassy in Seoul, Korea from 2002 to 2006.  

Since joining the Foreign Service in 1988, Kim has also held positions at posts in Hong Kong, Japan, and Malaysia.  

Before be joined the foreign service, he was a Deputy District Attorney in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. – Rappler.com
