DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Rodrigo Duterte said nothing can convince him to attend his proclamation as the winner of the 2016 presidential elections.

“I am not attending any proclamation. I’ve never attended any proclamation in my life,” he said after being asked if anything could change his mind about his decision.

Duterte granted the media an interview late at night on Saturday, May 28, in a Davao City hotel.

The proclamation of the winners of the presidential and vice-presidential race may happen early on the week of May 30.

But Duterte has said he will not attend because he finds the ceremony “corny.” But close associates of his, including his incoming Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, still thinks the president-elect will eventually decide to show up.

But PDP-Laban president Senator Koko Pimentel has said Duterte’s presence in his own proclamation is not mandatory.

Asked who he has tapped to serve as his representative during the proclamation, he said, “I don’t know. May mga abogado ako doon. Makinig na lang sila (I don’t know. I have lawyers there. They should just listen.)”

Duterte has other plans for the week of proclamation.

He is set to hold a meeting of his incoming Cabinet members on Tuesday, May 31.

He told media that on that day, he will be announcing new appointees. By then, he said, a “majority” of Cabinet positions will already have appointees.
