Approval and trust ratings for the top 3 government officials in the country remain high, latest poll numbers showed Thursday

MANILA, Philippines – Approval and trust ratings for the top 3 government officials in the country remain high, latest poll numbers showed Thursday, October 4.

President Benigno Aquino III, Vice President Jejomar Binay, and Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile all enjoy high approval and trust from Filipinos, the latest Pulse Asia “Ulat ng Bayan” survey revealed. The Ulat ng Bayan survey was conducted from August 31 to September 7, through face-to-face interviews.

Binay enjoyed the highest approval rating among the top government officials, with an approval rating of 85%. He also has the lowest disapproval (2%) and “undecided” (13%) rating in the survey.

Aquino, meanwhile, had an 11-percentage point increase in his overall approval score, from 67% in May to 78% in the latest survey.

He also registered a 4% disapproval rating, while 18% of those surveyed are undecided on his performance, the survey revealed.

Enrile, meanwhile, had a 72% approval rating, the third highest. He also has a 6% disapproval rating and a 23% undecided rating.

All 3, the Pulse Asia survey showed, had a majority approval rating across geographic areas and socioeconomic classes.

Undecided on Belmonte, Sereno

On the other hand, House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. had a greater undecided rating compared to his approval rating (45% undecided vs 38% approval). He also has a double-digit disapproval rating of 15%, the highest among the top officials.

This trend also showed up when the results are viewed across geographic areas and socioeconomic classes.

Meanwhile, Belmonte and newly-installed Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno both have high “undecided” ratings when it comes to trust from the public, the survey said.

While Aquino, Binay, and Enrile all enjoy high trust ratings nationwide (78%, 84%, and 63%, respectively), Belmonte and Sereno have near-majority to majority “undecided” ratings (48% and 52%, respectively), higher compared to their trust ratings (36% and 23%, respectively).

Sereno and Belmonte also had double-digit “small/no trust” ratings, at 14% and 22% respectively.

The Chief Justice was only included in the trust rating survey since she was appointed to her post on August 25, a few days before the survey was conducted.

Majority of Filipinos also approve the work of the Senate, Supreme Court, and the House of Representatives.

The survey is based on a sample of 1,200 representative adults 18 years old and above, and has a +/-3% margin of error at 95% confidence level.

“In keeping with our academic nature, no religious, political, economic, or partisan group influenced any of these processes. Pulse Asia undertakes Ulat ng Bayan surveys on its own without any party singularly commissioning the research effort,” the research group said.
