MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines on Monday, July 4, condemned the suicide bombing that killed at least 213 people and was claimed by the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group.

“The Philippines offers its heartfelt condolences to the Republic of Iraq and the families of the victims of these cowardly acts of violence,” the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement Monday.

The bombing happened on Sunday, July 3, ahead of the holiday marking the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

“Ramadan is an occasion for reflection to do more good, not otherwise,” the DFA said.

“The Philippines joins the international community in condemning terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” it added.

The bombing on Sunday is one of the deadliest ever militant attacks in Iraq.

The suicide car bombing, which ripped through a crowded shopping area and sparked infernos in nearby buildings, also wounded more than 200 people, security and medical officials told Agence France-Presse on Monday.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi vowed “punishment” for those responsible, and his office declared 3 days of mourning for the victims of the attack. – with reports from Agence France-Presse/Rappler.com
