Dear Rappler reader,
It’s a manic Tuesday, the hangover of a crazy Monday. Yesterday, the nation saw President Duterte’s top critic, Senator Leila de Lima stripped of her chairmanship, after she put on the witness stand a self-confessed hitman who said he did liquidation jobs for Duterte. Not be outdone, the House of Representatives is doing a probe on de Lima, for allegedly collecting from inmates who were drug-dealing from their cells. And still on drugs, another man know for the crazy characters he played, Jim Carrey, is being sued for supplying drugs to his girlfriend.
Below are the big stories we think you shouldn’t miss.
Voting 16-4, the Senate ousted Senator Leila de Lima as chair of the committee on justice and human rights. The motion came from Senator Manny Pacquaio. Senators who voted yes led by Senator Tito Sotto said she was ousted because she became “biased” in handling a probe into extra-judicial killings allegedly in the name of President Rodrigo Duterte’s war vs drugs. Senator Tito Sotto, one of the 16 who voted against her, said, “I urge my fellow senators not to use their committees as a venue to besmirch anyone.” De Lima said, “I have no doubt that the President is involved in this.”

President Rodrigo Duterte finally responded to media’s questions on self-confessed Edgar Matobato’s claim he ordered liquidations in Davao as mayor. Without directly confirming or denying, he warned that anyone who tells another person to lie under oath is committing a crime. The controversial President, who earlier said he would stay out of events in Congress (that culminated in Senator de Lima’s ouster as justice committee chair), said a thousand hearings will not stop his war on drugs. A survey estimates that 4.8 million Filipinos aged 10-69 years old used illegal drugs at least once in their lives.

The House committee on justice is investigating the proliferation of drugs inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) while Senator Leila de Lima was justice secretary. President Rodrigo Duterte alleged de Lima had links to the drug trade inside the NBP. In a publicized drug matrix, the President claimed De Lima collected money from drug lords through her alleged boyfriend. Watch the events unfold here.
