5 local government units awarded for child-friendly practices
The LGUs receive the Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities

MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte, together with Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Judy Taguiwalo, on Monday, September 26, awarded 5 cities and municipalities for promoting the welfare of children in their respective communities.

The Presidential Award for Child-Friendly Municipalities and Cities (PACFMC), spearheaded by the DSWD’s Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC), gave a trophy and a P500,000 cash grant to the following local government units:

  • Buenavista, Guimaras – 1st to 3rd Class Municipality Category
  • Dumalneg, Ilocos Norte – 4th to 6th Class Municipality Category
  • Ilagan City, Isabela – Component City Category
  • Santiago City, Isabela – Independent Component City Category
  • Davao City – Highly Urbanized City Category

The cash grant, sourced from the President’s Fund, should be used by the LGUs to implement projects for children.

“We want their efforts to be sustained and replicated not just for our children’s welfare, but for those also of other marginalized and vulnerable groups and families that need our support and service,” said Taguiwalo.

The PACFMC aims to ensure that children’s welfare is given attention down to the local level. Children are still considered among the marginalized in and out of the country. (READ: 1 in 3 Filipino kids still malnourished, stunted – study)

Local governments, however, are making strides in promoting children’s rights.

Based on a Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) audit last year, 75.96% of municipalities and cities were eligible for the Seal of Child-Friendly Local Governance (SCFLG).

To be eligible for the SCFLG, local programs must follow criteria set by the DILG on health, education, protection, and children’s participation.

These include a decrease in child deaths, ensuring elementary school completion, and absence of child labor, among others. (READ: Does your local government protect children?)
