CAGAYAN, Philippines (UPDATED) – A town councilor in Cagayan province was ambushed around 12 pm on Wednesday, October 12, the Cagayan provincial information office said.

Mario Tangaro, the president of the Association of Barangay Captains in Iguig town, was driving home when the identified assailants opened fire at him along the national highway in Barangay Minanga.

Tangaro, chairman of San Isidro village, reportedly had just attended the town council’s session.

He was immediately brought to a hospital, and placed under intensive care after a major operation.

A source told the Cagayan information office that the suspect allegedly stopped the victim from his speeding motorcycle, then shot him several times.

In a phone interview, Police Senior Inspector Avelino, Iguig town police chief, said they are still investigating the motive for the shooting.

His friends and relatives are asking for prayers for his quick recovery. Rappler.com
