A first: Duterte admin gets majority approval across all issues
Pulse Asia measures the approval ratings of the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte regarding 12 national issues

MANILA, Philippines – The administration of President Rodrigo Duterte may be focused on the war on drugs, but it still recorded in a September 2016 poll majority approval in all issues that Filipinos consider to be the most urgent.

It is a feat that no other administration has been able to achieve. “It’s the first time that [an] administration got majority approval across all issues,” said Pulse Asia Research President Ronald Holmes.

The Duterte administration got the highest approval ratings in “fighting criminality” and “fighting graft and corruption in government,” getting more than 80% ratings in these issues.

But it got the lowest approval ratings in 4 issues considered most urgent – improving the pay of workers, creating jobs, reducing the poverty of many Filipinos, and controlling inflation. Still, it recorded an approval rating of more than 50% on them.

The same survey indicates that the public wants the government to shift its focus from fighting criminality to other national concerns. (READ: Duterte must address issues other than crime)

The poll measured the Duterte administration’s approval ratings in 12 issues:

  • Fighting criminality (89%)
  • Fighting graft and corruption in government (89%)
  • Increasing peace in the country (76%)
  • Responding to the needs of areas affected by calamities (74%)
  • Protecting the welfare of OFWs (73%)
  • Enforcing the law on all, whether influential or ordinary people (71%)
  • Stopping the destruction and abuse of our environment (68%)
  • Defending the integrity of Philippine territory against foreigners (67%)
  • Improving the pay of workers (64%)
  • Creating jobs (62%)
  • Reducing the poverty of many Filipinos (59%)
  • Controlling inflation (51%)

In comparison, the previous administration of President Benigno Aquino III recorded in its first 3 months a majority approval in most issues except in controlling inflation and reducing poverty.

The respondents were shown a rating board to assess the administration.

(We want to know your opinion about the performance of the administration of President Duterte in the following national issues. In each issue mentioned, please use the board  to say if you are (show rating board) about his performance in these issues?)

The rating board allowed them to choose from “Truly Approve,” “Somewhat Approve,” “Disapprove,” “Somewhat Disaprove,” “Truly Disapprove.” – Rappler.com
