
TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – At least 4 people died in Cagayan when powerful Typhoon Lawin (international codename Haima) hit the province Wednesday night, October 19.
Rogelio Sending, Cagayan provincial information officer, said one of the casualties was Rosita Rumbaua in Baggao town.
Rumbaua died when their whole house was blown away by strong winds. Four of her family members survived.
Another casualty was Sherly Baccay, a teacher in University of St. Louis in Tuguegarao. Baccay died when a tree fell on her house. Her family was also injured.
Sending said thousands of people are still in the evacuation centers as their houses were damaged and flooded.
About 36,000 people in 25 towns and 148 villages (barangays) were affected by the typhoon. The provincial government said the number could still increase as some reports from other towns have yet to reach them.
Sending said they don’t have estimate yet on when the power could be brought back.
He added that P5.2 billion worth of damaged agricultural crops was recorded so far. – Rappler.com
