Cops to help man traffic at C5, Commonwealth, NAIA Expressway
PNP Highway Patrol Group personnel will be deployed to 'address the traffic problem and ensure the safe travel of motorists'

MANILA, Philippines – Personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP) Highway Patrol Group (HPG) will be deployed along C5, Commonwealth Avenue, and the NAIA Expressway starting Monday, November 14.

“This to address the traffic problem and ensure the safe travel of motorists and other road users in the said areas,” said the Inter-Agency Council on Traffic (i-ACT) on Sunday, November 13.

The decision was finalized after a meeting of the council, headed by Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade.

The deployment of HPG personnel “is a part of the plans and programs of the Council to ensure the smooth flow of traffic not only in EDSA but also in other national and arterial roads that affect it.”

At present, the cops are only deployed along EDSA, the metropolis’ main thoroughfare and one of the most traffic-clogged streets in the country.

This month, the i-ACT and the Metro Manila Council (MMC) also began implementing the expanded number coding scheme. The coding hours were extended until 8 pm from the previous 7 pm, and more roads were included in the “no window hours” policy.

President Rodrigo Duterte is still awaiting Congress’ decision on his request for emergency powers to address the traffic crisis.

Senator Grace Poe previously said the Senate could approve the bill granting emergency powers before the year ends, while the measure is also up for talks in the House of Representatives. (READ: Recto hits DOTr’s ‘unfunded, scattered’ plans vs traffic– Rappler.com
