MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) –  Art Lachica, the Bureau of Customs’ (BOC) Deputy Commissioner for its Internal Administration Group, was killed in an ambush Thursday evening, November 17, on Espana Boulevard in Manila.

Lachica sustained multiple gun shots to the chest but died in the hospital.

Portcalls added Lachica’s bodyguard, identified as Romulo Delima, was wounded in the ambush. He said the suspect fled on foot after the shooting.

The BOC said it was deeply saddened by the incident, expressing condolences to Lachica’s family and loved ones. 

Lachica was appointed to his post during the time of former BOC Commissioner John P. Sevilla, and is a holdover official from the Aquino administration.

Before Lachica was appointed to the BOC, he worked as deputy executive director of the Career Executive Service Board.
