MANILA, Philippines – A solon wants the House of Representatives to formally commend and congratulate the first Filipino to be installed as president of California’s Woodbury University.

Quezon City Rep Winston “Winnie” Castelo filed House Resolution 2852 citing the accomplishment of Dr Luis Ma. Calingo as a “source of great pride and honor to the country.”

“Calingo is the 1st Filipino president in the 128-year history of Woodbury and the 2nd Filipino to head an American university,” Castelo said.

Based on reports, New Jersey’s Seton Hall University president Dr Amado Gabriel Esteban is the first Filipino to head a U.S. university.

Schooled in the Philippines, “Calingo’s brand of leadership was honed by the crucible of the Philippine martial law that suppressed freedom,” Castelo said.

He earned from the University of the Philippines his bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering (1976) and master of science degree in urban and regional planning (1978).

He would later earn his master in business administration and doctorate in Philosophy degrees from the Katz School of Business at the University of Pittsburg. – Rappler.com
