MANILA, Philippines – The camp of Taguig City Mayor Ma. Laarni Cayetano managed to stop on Monday, February 20, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) from retrieving the ballot boxes involved in an electoral protest filed against her by her rival.
The Comelec had ordered the retrieval of the ballot boxes so it can start the recount proceedings required in the electoral protest filed against Cayetano by defeated mayoral bet Dante Tinga, a retired associate justice of the Supreme Court.
Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento told reporters that Comelec personnel went to the Taguig City hall Monday morning to get the ballot boxes. But they were stopped yet again by Cayetano’s supporters who barricaded the area, Sarmiento added.
“Pumunta sila don kaninang umaga pero hindi sila nakapasok. Pagpasok pa lang, may mga nakahaang ng mga jeep and bus. May isa sa kanila na sinubukan pumasok sa gilid pero sinita,” Sarmiento said. The Comelec team had to retreat for fear of any untoward incident, he added.
He said the Comelec will discuss the incident in an en banc meeting tomorrow. “We’ll study what to do next.”
Cayetano won over Tinga by 2,420 votes in the 2010 polls, but the latter cried electoral fraud. Cayetano is the wife of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano. – Rappler.com
