MANILA, Philippines – Supreme Court Justice Marvic Leonen has formally assumed his post at the High Tribunal and was already briefed by Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Leonen took his oath as the Court’s 172nd justice before Sereno on Wednesday, November 21, at the SC building in Manila, on the same day he took his oath of office before President Benigno Aquino III. After this, Sereno briefed Leonen about his new post. Leonen however would not provide further details of the meeting.
Leonen also went to his new office in the SC on Thursday, November 22, although he didn’t stay long.
“They are still preparing my office and am still setting up staff,” he said in a text message.
He added that he will be back on Monday, November 26 to attend the flag ceremony.
Both Leonen and Sereno will be at the SC for more than a decade. The 49-year-old Leonen has 21 years in the High Court, while the 52-year-old Sereno has 18 years as chief justice before she reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70.
The two are also Aquino appointees. Sereno was appointed to the SC in 2010 before being named chief justice in August. Other Aquino appointees at the SC include Justices Estela Perlas-Bernabe and Bienvenido Reyes.
Leonen served as government peace panel chair before he was appointed to the SC.– Rappler.com
