MANILA, Philippines – A new limited-edition P50 bill commemorating the 45th anniversary of the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is already in circulation, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Sunday, November 25.

Only 10 million bills featuring the regional bloc’s logo have been issued as part of a joint project of the DFA and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to “generate greater public awareness of ASEAN in preparation for the ASEAN Community in 2015,” the DFA noted in a statement.

The Philippines was one of the original founding members of the organization in 1967 along with Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Brunei, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam have since joined ASEAN, which counts as observer nations Papua New Guinea and East Timor.

The ASEAN Community is the next step of economic integration transforming the regional bloc into a single market and production base by December 31, 2015. – Rappler.com
