Herbert Chavez is more than just a Superman clone — he has substance, too

MANILA, Philippines – No, the 13 surgical procedures that Herbert Chavez has undergone to make him look like his Kryptonian idol were not exactly what caught the attention of the Guinness World Records organization.

Chavez, known in cosplay circles as the “Pinoy Superman,” now holds the largest collection of Superman memorabilia. The Guinness World Records recognized 1,253 of his more-than-5,000 Superman items as licensed collection.

“I was really surprised. Even my friends were shocked to learn that I already have the largest collection of Superman (items) in the world because I had this habit of buying Superman items everyday from Baclaran to Divisoria,” says Chavez.

The 36-year-old cosplayer stresses that most of his items were not included in the record to be fair to other people who only bought licensed Superman products in the previous years.

Chavez credits this achievement to TV shows that featured his love for the Man of Steel in 2011.

No regrets

Chavez started undergoing a nose job, lip injections, chin augmentation, thigh implants and other surgical procedures in 1995. Undergoing surgeries to mold his Filipino face with the Caucasian superhero’s chiseled features has gotten him flak.

He accepts these criticisms graciously.

“There is nothing wrong with people not liking what I have done to my face,” he says. “It just so happens that what I did is turning out to be good for me.”

Chavez adds that he gets fulfillment from making sick children happy whenever they see him dressed as Superman.

“All of us have our own idols,” he says.

Horsalinda

The Pinoy Superman is busy promoting his upcoming comic book, Horsalinda, a superheroine who manifests the powers of the winged Pegasus, a seahorse, Centaur and the Tikbalang, depending on what skillset a crisis calls for.

“I am an ’80s baby who grew up reading comics in the newsstands,” Chavez explains. “Horsalinda is the character that has always been in my mind to write a story about since I was a kid.” – Rappler.com
