Pilgrims duped into paying Mecca travel fees file charges

The victims from various parts of Mindanao tell Manila police they were asked to pay P50,000 to P70,000 each, but were unable to leave on August 25

MANILA, Philippines – Around 200 Muslim pilgrims filed a complaint with the Manila Police District (MPD) on Monday, August 28, against 3 suspects who duped them into paying for a trip to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to participate in the annual Hajj.

The MPD General Assignment and Investigation Section detained suspects Salamah Zabala Dibarosan, Alma Sumalang Carreon, and Usman Adil Tah.

The police had responded to an incident, where the 200 Muslims stormed a room at the 3rd floor of the Sunny Bay Suites Hotel in Ermita, where the 3 were staying.

Police investigators said the suspects duped the Muslims of P50,000 to 70,000 each, promising to arrange for their participation in the annual pilgrimage. They should have left on August 25.

The victims are Basilan, Zamboanga del Norte, Cotabato, Davao, General Santos City, Sulu. Some were from a Muslim community in Manila.

The 3 suspects were brought to the Manila City Hall to undergo inquest proceedings and are facing largescale estafa charges. The Manila police said they will also forward other complaints to the Basilan police as some of the transactiosn between some victims and the suspects took place. –
