Nograles son joins PDP-Laban, takes oath before Duterte
Describing Karlo Nograles as 'one of the most powerful congressmen,' President Rodrigo Duterte says, 'We can take advantage of him'

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The son of President Rodrigo Duterte’s former nemesis joined the Philippines’ ruling party on Saturday, September 2, the same day his family apologized for their decades-old rift with the Dutertes.

Davao City 1st District Representative Karlo Alexei Nograles took his oath of allegiance to the ruling party, PDP-Laban, before Duterte himself.

Nograles is the son of former House Speaker Prospero Nograles Jr, who, also on Saturday, said sorry to Duterte for their past “heartaches.”

“Since I can’t make it on September 8th, may I ask you that you accept me to PDP-Laban?” Nograles told Duterte.

Nograles was referring to a scheduled party oath-taking on September 8, which he cannot attend because he needs to join a budget hearing.

It did not take long for Duterte to accept him.

The President then initiated an oath-taking ceremony, much to the surprise of the guests, many of whom are local barangay officials of the first district.

Nograles is “one of the most powerful congressmen,” Duterte said. “We can take advantage of him.”

Nograles is a member of the National Unity Party which was formed by former members of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD.

Nograles’ swearing in to PDP-Laban is the latest of the twist in the relationship between two of Davao’s biggest political clans.

A year earlier, the Nograles family made an unprecedented move by declaring its support for Duterte’s presidential bid. – Rappler.com
