5 dead, dozens injured as passenger vans crash in Cagayan
(UPDATED) Police Senior Inspector Manuel Viloria Jr of Amulung town says the Isuzu van, which hit an approaching Toyota passenger van, was overloaded and overspeeding when its tire blew out

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines (UPDATED) – Five people were killed while 29 others were injured when two passenger vans figured in a crash in Cagayan on Sunday morning, October 1.

Police identified the fatalities as Reynalda Tolentino, Erlinda Duran, Marivic Battung, Floraida Sales, and Hemilita Cadiz.

In a phone interview, Police Senior Inspector Manuel Viloria Jr of Amulung town said the Isuzu passenger van, driven by Romtum Bartolome, was heading to Baggao town when its tire blew out and hit an approaching Toyota passenger van in Barangay Baculud around 10 am on Sunday.

Amulung police investigators also said no passenger died on the spot. All of them were brought to a hospital in Cagayan for treatment.

The wounded victims are now being treated in Cagayan Valley Medical Center and Divine Mercy Wellness Center in Tuguegarao, a source said.

Viloria said the Isuzu van was overloaded and overspeeding when its tire blew out, and is “clearly at fault” for the crash.

The Isuzu van was carrying 24 passengers when it can only carry 16 passengers, Viloria also said.

He added that the long skid mark of the van also indicated it was speeding before the crash. – Rappler.com
