Boy Morales dies
MANILA, Philippines - Horacio "Boy" Morales Jr - former communist leader, former Agrarian Reform Secretary, and a longtime political campaign strategist - died on Wednesday, February 29. He was 68.
Morales suffered a massive heart attack in early December in Baguio City, where he was playing golf.
He's been in coma since.
Sources close to him said Morales died at around 5:20 pm on Wednesday at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City.
Morales led a fascinating career in government and politics. He spent a long time in development and policy work before joining the communist underground in 1977. That year, he was one of the awardees of the prestigious Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines. Instead of getting the award, he announced his decision to join the underground National Democratic Front.
In the post-Marcos years, he ran for the Senate but lost. Later on, he served as a key campaign strategist for Joseph Estrada, who won as president in 1998. Morales was credited for Estrada's "JEEP" campaign.
