DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A cop and an Army soldier were captured by suspected communist rebels in Compostela Valley Thursday morning, January 17, a military officer said.

Maj Jacob Obligado, civil-military operations chief of the 10th Infantry Division, said both were seized at a checkpoint manned by at least 30 New People’s Army guerillas in Sitio Mangob, Barangay Imelda in the town of Laak.

The cop was identified as PO1 Ruel Pasion and is assigned at the San Isidro Municipal Police Station while the soldier was identified as Pfc Jezreel Culango based in Sawata, San Isidro.

“Culango is on his way to visit his girlfriend at Barangay Mangloy,” Obligado said.

Obligado said he believes the NPA rebels are from the Front 34 of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee under an unknown leader.

About 12 of the fighters were dressed in military uniform while the rest were in civilian clothes during the incident, Obligado said, citing reports gathered from the field.

The rebels fled with their captives toward Sitio Tugpahan in the same barangay.

Obligado said policemen and soldiers are conducting pursuit operations. – Rappler.com
