LAOAG CITY, Philippines –  Under a downpour, residents brought their mayor of 9 years, Michael V. Fariñas, to his final resting place on Friday, June 15, over a week after he died in a car crash.

Fariñas, who was on his second term as city vice mayor, would have turned 53 in August. He had served as city mayor for 3 consecutive terms, from 2004 to 2013.

His family and clan led a motorcade from his house atop a hill at the city outskirts, to the city cathedral, passing by the Laoag City General Hospital, which his administration set up.

Farinas is survived by his wife, Mayor Chevylle Fariñas, and children Jami, Mikee and Mots.

He was the most senior among the second generation Fariñas, and said to be the favorite nephew of House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas.

He has in fact followed in his uncle’s footsteps. Like Rudy, Michael went to Ateneo de Manila Univerity, and took up law. Like Rudy, he became mayor of Laoag.
