Two men were rushed to the hospital after a pill box exploded behind Palma Hall at the University of the Philippines Diliman campus

MANILA, Philippines – Two men were hurt after a pill box exploded inside the University of the Philippines Diliman campus on Monday, January 28.

The victims, who suffered minor injuries, were maintenance personnel fixing street lights wiring, according to Noel Sublay, Chief of the Explosives Ordinance Disposal of the Philippine National Police.

He said the pill box was triggered by friction, possibly caused by the ongoing maintenance work.

Police also said that a fraternity may have planted the pill box in that area for future use. At least one UP fraternity is known to use pill boxes in clashes with other fraternities.

The site of the explosion is close to where fraternities hang out. The explosion occurred along Roxas Ave. cor Fernandez St., behind the Arts and Sciences Building, Palma Hall.

A bomb detection unit and campus police were on site immediately after the explosion, and the area was cordoned off.

The Quezon City Police District said the victims were taken to the East Avenue Medical Center. – Rappler.com with reports from Raisa Marielle Serafica
