Explosions rock Cotabato, Sulu; 2 killed

[UPDATED] A series of weekend blasts leaves at least 2 dead and 12 injured

[UPDATED] COTABATO CITY, Philippines – Explosions rocked areas of Cotabato City and Jolo, Sulu on Saturday, March 3, following a similar blast near the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) regional headquarters 2 days ago.

The first explosion took place at around 6:30 am behind a beauty parlor along Gov Gutierrez Ave, Rosary Heights 7, approximately 100 meters from the main gate of the ARMM governor’s office.

Having examined the explosion scene, authorities found another improvised explosive device inside a sack also behind the beauty parlor.

Then, at 7:20 am, another loud explosion took place in front of the ARMM Regional Ports Management Authority. The incident left an 18-year-old resident, Brando Esmael, injured.

Later during the day, another IED exploded in front of a commercial store along Serantas St, Jolo, Sulu. The blast killed 2 and injured 11, according to a report by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The AFP identified the dead as Indao Mangilala, a vendor, and Deonila Asiri, a teacher.

The owners of the store that exploded had reportedly received bomb threats from the Abu Sayyaf, the AFP added.
