Cebu City Library offers free Spanish classes beginning April 27
CEBU CITY, Philippines – The Cebu City Public Library opened its enrollment this week for Spanish classes set to begin this Saturday, April 27.
According to a post on Facebook by Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, the class will go over conversational skills, basic grammar, cultural information, and pronunciation.
“Due to our experience with the majority of online registrants not showing up, registration will have to be done in person. 40 slots are available, first come first served,” Osmeña said in his post.
“If demand is high enough, we can organize a second batch that can accommodate 70 students scheduled for Saturday and Sunday from 2-5 pm,” he added.
Over 5,000 registered for the library’s Japanese classes, which began in March.
The language programs are part of the city’s improvement programs for the library, which made national headlines for being the first in the Philippines to open for 24 hours in 2018.
They also began offering Korean classes last February.
On March 21, the city’s public library was recognized as the country’s top-performing library by the National Library of the Philippines and the Asia Foundation.
Since beginning its all-day operations, the library reported a 296% increase in the number of visitors, or a total of 103,000 in 2018. This was up from 26,000 total visitors in 2017.
The library, officially known as the Jose Rizal Memorial Library, celebrates its 100th anniversary this April. – Rappler.com
