CAMIGUIN, Philippines – Three tourists from Davao City died in a vehicular crash in Camiguin that took place at around 4:30 pm on Saturday, June 22.

Camiguin Provincial Police Commander Colonel Roy Bahian identified the fatalities as Julie Ann Mae Olive, Jovert de Asis, and Ian Jumahalili.

Police investigation showed that the tourists arrived on Saturday morning, and were originally planning to visit White Island. But since it was already noon, they instead went to Saay Cold Spring in Barangay Poblacion in Mambajao town.

Saay Cold Spring is located in the mountains.

“On their way down, the vehicle they were riding, a Toyota HiAce bearing plate number PYQ 248 lost its brakes as they were going downhill,” Bahian said.

Police investigation showed that the driver, Joy Sobremisana, tried to stop the vehicle by running it into the ditch by the roadside. But because of the momentum they continued downhill where they hit a curve and then slammed into a coconut tree.

The 3 victims died on the spot, according to the Mambajao Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO).

The Mambajao DRRMO identified the injured as Eric Opao, Jeffry Golingay, Ernesto Ong, Rose Ann Balaba, Jeffrey Dismas, Peter Anthony Cantila, Glyn Ann Sabacan, Jenny Vic Morensillo, Rustom Porosuelo, and a 4-year-old child.

Captain Arnold Gaabucayan, Mambajao Police Chief, said most of the van’s passengers were employees of IBEX Global Davao, who were in Camiguin for their company team-building activity.

“They were on their way to the town proper when they met the accident,” Gaabucayan added.

All passengers were immediately evacuated and brought to the provincial hospital by the Mambajao responders,” Gaabucayan said.

Mambajao Mayor Jurdin Jesus Romualdo was on site and in the Camiguin Provincial Hospital to provide help to the wounded and help inform the victim’s families.

Gaabucayan said some of the families of the victims have already been notified.
