MANILA, Philippines – Eight inmates escaped from the Lamitan City Jail in Basilan on Sunday morning, July 7, the Lamitan police said. 

According to a spot report by the police, the 8 inmates escaped from jail at 8:30 am on Sunday, taking with them two loaded firearms.

Hot pursuit is being conducted by the Phiippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

One of the inmates is jailed for murder, while the 7 others are jailed for violation of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

According to the spot report, inmates Moumar Gandali and Norman Bisal asked the jail guard on duty for permission to throw out garbage.

The jail guard in turn directed the trustee, inmate Taha Morales, to open the lock. A trustee is an inmate who is qualified to undertake roles in the administration and maintenance of prison operations.

“Gandali and Bisal saw and took Two (2) firearms (M16 and M14) including One (1) Bandolier with ammos placed at a vacant cell and escaped to unknown direction bringing said firearms together with six (6) other prisoners,” said the spot report.

Morales – the trustee – was among the other 6 detainees who escaped.
