Taal Volcano eruption: What we know about affected towns, cities

MANILA, Philippines (18th UPDATE) – Taal Volcano was downgraded to Alert Level 2 on Friday, February 14. It was under Alert Level 4 for two weeks after it first spewed ash on January 12, then was under Alert Level 3 for almost 3 weeks from January 26.

The eruption has so far affected at least 151,386 families or 584,236 persons in the provinces of Batangas and Cavite, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Of this number, around 1,813 families or 6,666 persons remain in evacuation centers. Meanwhile, 52,641 families or 194,806 persons are outside evacuation centers or staying with relatives or friends.

As of January 19, the cost of agricultural damage rose to P3.22 billion from an earlier figure of P3.06 billion. Damage to infrastructure was also pegged at P192.98 million as of February 6.

Here are some details in each city and municipality, based on latest information from the NDRRMC’s situation report as of 6 am Sunday, February 16.

The cities and municipalities below are arranged alphabetically. This will be updated as soon as new situation reports come in.

The NDRRMC noted that many towns and cities in Calabarzon, Metro Manila, and Central Luzon have hosted internally displaced persons (IDPs) from other areas.

DANGER ZONE AREAS

The following towns and cities are within Taal’s 14-kilometer (km) danger zone, which means they would be hit hardest in the event of a hazardous eruption:

Batangas: Agoncillo, Alitagtag, Balete, Cuenca, Laurel, Lemery, Lipa City (especially lakeside areas), Malvar, Mataasnakahoy, San Jose, San Nicolas, Santa Teresita, Taal, Talisay, Tanauan City
Cavite: Tagaytay City

Meanwhile, parts or the entirety of the following areas are within Taal’s 17-km danger zone:

Batangas: Balayan, Bauan, Calaca, Lian, Nasugbu, San Luis, San Pascual, Santo Tomas, Tuy
Cavite: Alfonso, Amadeo, Indang, Mendez, Silang
Laguna: Calamba City

The western side of Malvar, Batangas, is within the 14-km radius danger zone, but most of the town is still within the 17-km radius.

BATANGAS

The following sections of the Talisay-Laurel-Agoncillo Road are still not passable due to damaged pavement and due to the lockdowns in certain villages in Agoncillo and Laurel:
