Patricia Evangelista is a Manila-based trauma journalist specializing in disaster, conflict, and development issues. She is a multimedia and investigative reporter for Rappler, producing longform narrative stories, analysis pieces, and short documentaries. 

Before she joined Rappler, she reported for the Abs-cbn News Channel (ANC) and the Philippine Daily Inquirer the 2009 massacre in Maguindanao, the disappearances and torture of activists under the Arroyo administration, and the long national campaign for the legislation of reproductive rights.

Her various television projects have been recipients of a number of local awards including four Gawad Tanglaw Awards and a Catholic Mass Media Award. She is a recipient of two New York Festivals medals for her work in ANC’s Storyline with director Paolo Villaluna. 

Her coverage of armed conflict in the southern Philippines as well as the aftermath of typhoon Haiyan, both for Rappler and Esquire Philippines where she was a writer-at-large, was awarded the Agence France-Presse Kate Webb Prize for exceptional journalism in dangerous conditions. 

She is a fellow of the South East Asian Press Alliance, a 2016 international fellow of the Dart Center Ochberg Fellowship for Trauma Reporting and of the 2018 John Logan Nonfiction Fellowship at the Carey Institute for Global Good. 

In 2015, she received the Ten Outstanding Young Men in Nation’s Service (TOYM) for Journalism, the only woman among the 10 recipients. In 2016, she was among the Ten Outstanding Women in Nation’s Service (TOWNS), also for Journalism.  

She continues to investigate the drug war launched by President Rodrigo Duterte through the Impunity Series with Magnum Foundation photographer Carlo Gabuco, with eighteen reports published to date. The longform narrative series is a recipient of the Human Rights Press Award, a Society of Publishers in Asia Award, and is a finalist for the Osborn Elliott Prize for Journalism.
